LACKADAISY Volume 2
Highly Recommended. By Tracy Butler. Amazing, gorgeous animation-style art. The second collected edition of the cult classic Eisner Award-nominated webcomic continues the story of the titular Saint Louis, Missouri speakeasy. ALSO AVAILABLE
LACKADAISY Volume 1 Hardcover
Highly Recommended. Deluxe Hardcover in Jacket. By Tracy J. Butler. The cult classic, Eisner Award-nominated webcomic, finally available in a handsome collected edition. It’s 1927 and Prohibition is in full effect in St. Louis, Missouri. Organized crime has risen to meet the relentless demand for illicit alcohol. Bootleggers, gangsters, and might-makes-right rule dominate the city’s underworld, fueled by the patrons of speakeasies like Lackadaisy. In the tradition of Blacksad, a delightful anthropomorphic world... The style of the comic is highly detailed, with elegantly attired cartoon characters that resemble styles from animated films of Walt Disney and Don Bluth. The earlier strips are sepia-toned, resembling aged photographs of the 1920s era, while more recent pages can be seen fully colored, often in shades of deep blue. Launched by Butler in July 2006, the comic updates on an irregular basis, with the most recent update published in 2020. Iron Circus Comics, 2024....More.

GEORGE SAND True Genius, True Woman
Recommended. By Séverine Vidal. Art by Kim Consigny. A scrupulously researched and tenderly revealing biography of one of the great pioneering figures of 19th-century French literature. Born in 1804, at a time when women were deprived of their civil rights (along with minors, criminals, and the insane), Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin grew up to defy those norms, both in her life and her writing. Adopting the gender-neutral pen name George Sand, and with a career lasting over forty years as a novelist and playwright, she is best remembered today for the affairs and friendships she enjoyed with men: the composer Chopin; the painter Delacroix; the novelist Balzac. Abrams, 2024....More.

KATE CAREW America's First Great Woman Cartoonist
By Eddie Campbell. Kate Carew was America’s first great woman cartoonist, drawing for newspapers in the first two decades of the 20th century. Her most endearing achievement was her cartoon alter ego “Aunt Kate,” whom she sketched into the proceedings, turning graphic reportage into her personal adventure from San Francisco and New York to London and Paris. She drew Sunday color comics alongside George Herriman, but it was in the idiom of freestanding caricature that she made her mark. She interviewed and sketched many of the famous celebrities of her time including the Wright brothers, who built and flew the world’s first successful airplane; Marconi, who invented wireless radio; Picasso, the most famous painter of the 20th century; the world champion African American heavyweight boxer Jack Johnson; and the leading figures of the suffragette movement in the years before women won the right to vote in the UK (1918) and the US (1920).
